Winning a Kyoorius Design Award for Sutary’s brand identity feels less like a moment of recognition and more like a validation of an idea we have been quietly building.
Creating the universe of Sutary was never only about designing furniture. It was about creating a world for people who connect with the same ideas of material, making, longevity and cultural memory.
When we named the studio Sutary, we wanted to reclaim a colloquial word associated with carpentry, one that was slowly disappearing behind more romanticised vocabulary like Sashimono and Kumiko. The intent was simple: take something rooted in our own making traditions and give it a contemporary expression, without losing the knowledge embedded within it.
That thought became the foundation of our identity.
Our logo brings together the Sutar Pakshi, the woodpecker, with the form of a chisel and the gesture of the human hand. A small, persistent act of making that creates a larger impact.
For us, the identity is not a symbol placed on our products. It is a reminder of what Sutary stands for: making with intent, respecting where knowledge comes from, and allowing it to evolve.
Delighted to see this idea recognised by the Kyoorius Design Awards. And even more grateful to Sarbat Design studio, who helped shape this little universe with us.
